Description

wood, light- and middle brown patina, remains of black paint, two male/one female figure, abrasion of paint, missing parts (feet of the female figure), rep. (both feet of the small male figure);
just like the “ibeji” figures of the Yoruba, the “venavi” figures were carved for deceased twins or triplets. They serve as abode for the spirit of the deceased. Ewe women used to care for them, they were fed, washed and caressed.


The object Three twin figures “venavi” with the object ID 3035810 was last part of the auction 75th tribal art auction at November 30, 2013 on Zemanek-Münster Auction house. The object with the lot number 94 achieved a sales price of EUR 120.
