Description

metal alloy, disc-shaped, decorated with incised ornaments resp. punched zoomorphic forms, min. dam., slight traces of abrasion, metal socle;
used in the cult of the river goddess “oshun”, who bestows the gift of children. The cult has spread over practically the whole of Yorubaland, but is centred on the city of Oshogbo. The frightening thing about Oshun is that she uses her fans not only as means of keeping cool, but also as throwing knives which she flings at those who arouse her anger.
