light wood, covered with gypsum, pink grounding, painted in black, red and gold, smiling face with pointed nose and prominent eyes, coiffure, eyebrows and beard painted, old label backside: “Prinzenmaske für das Wajang…Java”, slightly dam. (nose tip);
“wayang” is a Javanese generic term for a theatrical performance - traditional shadow puppet theatre (“wayang kulit”), performances with puppets (“wayang golek”) or with human dancers wearing wooden masks (“wayang topeng”). “Wayang topeng” (“topeng” = mask) theatre mainly deals with themes from the kingdom of Jenggala, mainly with the love story of crown prince “Raden Panji” and princess “Candra”.
