Description
wood, grass fibre, brown patina, wooden framework, all parts artificially mortised or dowelled with wooden plugs, decorative batten with bows on top and at the base, rounded forms, seat of fine plaited grass fibre matting, slightly dam. abrasion, traces of usage;
folding canvas chairs, of European origin, probably reached the interior of Africa about the same time as the first traders and explorers who came from Europe in the nineteenth century. Various models were copied and adapted to the indigenous style by local carpenters.
