Description

wood, whitened with kaolin, with hat-shaped superstructure, slightly dam., missing parts (above all backside at the base and at the hat), cracks, socle;
figures of this type represent spirits “edjo” of mythical warriors considered founders of Urhobo villages. They are dramatically displayed, often in large groups, in village shrines where they receive offerings as appeasement for the spirits.
