Description

wood, rich dark brown patina, small remains of kaolin, a stocky body rising from bulky feet, especially expressive: glazed eyes with painted pupils, ears with drilled holes, slightly dam., minor missing parts;
Tiv figures can be divided in two groups: some, rather realistic, are portable, while the larger, more abstract images are posts. Both types seem to have been general tutelary deities revered for the protection and prosperity they provided agricultural lands and families, especially regarding marriage and human fertility.
