Description

wood, pigments, hair, glass, old coll. no. “Liberia No. 124”

A comparable work is illustrated in Bastin (1984, ill. 443) and in AHDRC 0063231.

The monumental female figure exudes extraordinary strength through her upright posture and serious, compelling expression.

The raised, patterned scarification extending vertically across the forehead and down the bridge of the nose was regarded in Kru culture as a sign of supreme feminine elegance, dignity, and social maturity. The applied human hair lends the sculpture an almost lifelike presence and reinforces the impression of an individual female portrait.
