Description

wood, red pigment, base

The red body paint on this figure immediately catches the eye, which is rather unusual for the Baule.

The red colour is associated with birth and rebirth in most African traditions and is therefore viewed as a “female” colour.

The bright red implies the highest sexual attractiveness and fertility, and refers to a woman who promises to bear her future husband many children.
