Côte d'Ivoire, Baule
sold EUR 600
Size
H: 46,5 cm
H: 18.3 inch

Description

wood, mat brown patina, traces of black paint, strings of miniature glass beads, characteristic posture, lengthened forms (upper part of the body, neck), raised scarification marks on face and neck, sacrificial traces, slightly dam., small fine cracks, rep. (metal clamp at the base);
either representing a “blolo bla” figure (= female partner from the other world) or an “asie usu” figure (= bush spirit). The latter might be proved by the sacrificial traces. Bush spirits are displayed between the fortune teller and the client during a public performance. But unless collected in situ, the actual function of a figure cannot reliably be determined.
