wood, dark brown patina, with lobe above the forehead, the navel particularly accentuated, slightly dam. (nose, mouth, left ear), missing parts (right foot tip/left foot), abrasion of paint, base;
Igbo figural sculptures are not “ancestor figures” in the sense of representing actual deceased people. Rather they are “invented” spirits or deities. Most of them were housed in shrines dedicated to tutelary deities heading public cults.
