Description
wood, dark brown patina, slightly encrusted in some areas, in parts shiny, squatting posture with pointed knees, flat hat-like headdress, diamond-shaped scarification marks on belly and cheeks, slightly dam., minor missing parts, cracks, base;
stylistically the Bwende are situated between the Kongo and the Bembe and draw their sculpted ritual and functional objects from both of these groups. Given the importance of the ancestor cult, most objects are linked with it and its elaborate funeral ceremonies.
