grained wood, middle brown patina, originally supporting a receptacle on the head, scarification marks, damaged, missing parts (receptacle), rep. (ear), on base;
from the islands off the coast of Guinea Bissau, the Bidyogo carve figures (“iran”) to serve as memorials to the deceased and as links to the world of the ancestors.
