Description
light wood, pigments,
The art of the Gulf of Papua was closely linked to the belief in powerful spirit beings known as “imunu”, which were associated with specific landscapes, rivers or sea areas, as well as the clans living there. A characteristic feature is the predominantly two-dimensional woodcarving, with board-like forms and shallow relief.
