The Mandinka (also Mandingo, Mandinko, Sose) are an ethnic group in West Africa whose members define themselves as the genetic or cultural descendants of the early historical kingdom of Mali, which controlled the trans-Saharan trade from the Maghreb to West Africa. In the 13th century, the Mandinka spread out from present-day Mali in a large empire. Today they live widely throughout West Africa, mainly in Guinea, Mali, Senegal, Gambia and Ghana.
