Description

wood, stool, lobes, breasts and arms carved separately and attached by nails, as well as the nutshell ears; a flat round face enclosed by beautiful curled lobes, the coating of middle brown patina mostly rubbed off, revealing gold coloured paint underneath, missing parts (both foot tips, both arms, and two further lobes, originally placed at the back of the head), rep. (both thighs and two of the lobes broken), cracks, plate;
probably part of a grouping of figures on a support for one of the “ntan” or “ompe” drums that form the popular drum ensembles among the Fante. It might as well have depicted a mother nursing a child and had been placed on a shrine.
