Shield "ghur" (Nuer) or "adeit" / "ayaak" (Dinka) · Sudan, Nuer, Dinka, Shilluk · ID: 3050574
Description
wood, animal skin, plant fibre,
Evanst-Pritchard, who collected such a shield from the Nuer in 1936, reported on the multifunctional usability of this type of shield.
The underside is partially hollowed out in the centre and provided with a bar that served as a handle when the object was used as a parrying shield.
The short legs meant that it could also be used as a headrest or stool. The hollow is even said to have served as a container for smoking utensils, for example.
The object Shield “ghur” (Nuer) or “adeit” / “ayaak” (Dinka) with the object ID 3050574 was last part of the auction 102nd Auction at April 13, 2024 on Zemanek-Münster Auction house and had the lot number 337.
