The painting shows the monk “Tang Seng”, who is accompanied by three persons: the monkey king “Sun Wukong” (one of the most famous mythical creatures in China), “Zhu Bajie” (mixed creature of pig and man) and “Sha Wujing” (a water- or semidemon).

The novel “The Journey to the West”, written in the 16th century during the Ming Dynasty, is one of the four classic novels of Chinese literature. It tells the story of a monk’s journey to the “Western Regions”, that is, Central Asia and India, to obtain Buddhist sacred texts (“sutras”) and bring them to China.
