Description

wood, dark brown patina, incised ornamental decor, remains of camwood powder inside, old inscription on underside of lid and box “151-7”, remains of old collection label “357 Bakuba…” at the same place, minor missing parts (underside of lid), abrasion;
Kuba wood carvers were profoundly influenced by women’s decorated textile production and replicated their design solutions on the surfaces of wooden objects. Such boxes were used for storing a red paste that both men and women commonly applied to the skin as cosmetic.
