The legendary “Bodhidharma” is considered the founder of Chan or Zen Buddhism.

“Bodhidharma” himself is said to have ripped off his eyelids to be safe from falling asleep during meditation - as exemplified in the “bodhidarma” iconography by the swelling eyes.

In the famous Shaolin Monastery, “Bodhidharma” is said to have founded Buddhist-Chinese martial arts (“Kung-fu”) in 527.
