Part of a fiddle, before 1920

Description

wood, middle brown patina, pokerwork, red thread, elaborately carved shaft with drilled holes for fixing the strings, surmounted by a standing female figure, carrying a bellied vessel on the head and a child on her back, soundbox and cords missing, rep. (breakage vessel), slight traces of usage and abrasion;
a fiddle made by the same artist is to be found in the Reiss-Engelhorn Museum Mannheim (Inventory no “IV Af 9095”).
This instrument of Middle Eastern origin is played by striking it with a short bow. It is usually played by professional musicians who travel from village to village to perform at ceremonies.
