The pair of rice deities can be attributed to the carver Tagiling of Hengyon, who worked mainly in the small village of Kababuyan. No records exist, but his surviving descendants say he was born in the 1870s and died in the 1930s. For comparable works from Tagiling see: “The People and Art of the Philippines”, 1981, ill. 184.
“Bulul” are deities associated with the production of bountiful harvests, capable of miraculously increasing the rice before and after it is stored in the granary.
