Description

light wood, red and black pigment, plant fibre, detailed reconstruction of outrigger with platform, boat corpus with incised and painted decor, slightly dam., breakage (prow ornament);
the model canoes were once used in a ritual performed for the sky god “Tehainga’atua”. Most of them were destroyed in 1938 when the first Christian missionaries arrived on the islands.


The object Outrigger canoe model with the object ID 3042449 was last part of the auction 86th Tribal Art Auction at May 27, 2017 on Zemanek-Münster Auction house. The object with the lot number 124 achieved a sales price of EUR 1,500.
