Netsuke amulet "fighting frogs" · Japan · ID: 3052860
Description
ivory, metal,
This piece is a “kagamibuta” netsuke consisting of a round ivory bowl fitted with a finely decorated metal lid, a material combination characteristic of this technically sophisticated netsuke type.
The lid depicts upright, anthropomorphic frogs, a motif rooted in the Japanese tradition of humorous animal parodies: two frogs engage in combat while others appear as spectators. The wave-patterned circular form evokes the pond as the frogs’ natural habitat, functioning here as a symbolic stage for the scene.
The object Netsuke amulet “fighting frogs” with the object ID 3052860 was last part of the auction Auction 106 at April 25, 2026 on Zemanek-Münster Auction house. The object with the lot number 122 achieved a sales price of EUR 700.
