Description

wood, the head ornament covered with clay-like mass and gypsum, originally painted in bright colours, the face without mass, dominated by the large painted eyes, written remark backside: “Last remains of my …excavations in …1893…E. Heltzel” (difficult to read or not readable at all), dam., missing parts;
these masks were not intended as portraits of their subject. Rather, they represented the idealized features of the deceased following his resurrection as a divine being in the afterlife.


The object Mummy mask with the object ID 3032560 was part of the auction 68th tribal art auction on March 3, 2012. The object with the lot number 73 achieved a sales price of EUR 1,200 with an asking price of EUR 800.
