Among the Pende, the possession of figurative sculpture was reserved for the chieftains.

Figures of this size representing mother and child were placed on the roof of ritual huts (cf. Strother, 2008, p. 33, fig. 6).

The figures watched over the community and were an indication of the presence of guardian spirits.
