Bangles of this basic type are found in many variations in southern Morocco, Mauritania, southern and south-western Algeria, in northern Mali as far as Niger. They are a document of trans-Saharan cultural exchange and are often attributed to the Tuareg, although the iconography clearly shows Berber origins.

Amulets with yellow-green-enamelling are frequently found in the area of the western Anti-Atlas. Without enamelling they are found further south as far as Mauritania as pendants on necklaces.

Hair rings like these are soaked with fragrant essences and perfume oils and belong to the typical jewellery of the Haratin women (descendants of black slaves). In many cases, the tips are enamelled or lacquered.
