Description

wood, reddish brown patina, stocky body with thin limbs, carrying a child on the left hip, bonnet-shaped coiffure with headcrest, handwritten collection number backside “L.C.30” and “A-200”, slightly dam. (nose, right breast), missing parts through insect caused damage (back, coiffure, headcrest), right foot and one half of the base missing, rep. (breakage/right elbow/forearm), base;
mother-and-child figures are reletively rare in Chokwe art. They express the essential role of women as the providers of life who thereby ensure the community’s continuity and prosperity.
