The Senufo also have maternity figures symbolic for fertility and reproduction and as a guarantee for the future existence of the community. Their real significance though is much more complex, they are incarnations of the primal mother “katyelèô”.
From the “tyekpa” society, the female counterpart of the “poro”, maternity figures were supported in funeral ceremonies in solemn processions.
