Description

wood, rest.

Based on stylistic features, this figure can be attributed to a master who, according to Vogel, was active at the beginning of the 20th century. A figure of his hand is in the Buffalo Museum of Science in the USA (cf. Vogel, 1989, p. 88). A figure that was donated to the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren in 1920 can also be attributed to him (cf. AHDRC 0028266).

Characteristic of his style is above all the extremely striking shape of the mouth with the curved upper lip, as well as a relatively naturalistic eye with clearly marked iris.

All three figures show the greatest similarities in terms of facial shape, profile and hairstyle as well as in terms of the somewhat coarse massive body formation, proportions and scarification.
