Description

wood, brown patina, traces of black paint, white and indigo blue pigment, narrow shape with elongated nose bridge and strong ram horns, fine grooved coiffure, eyezone and mouth accentuated by brass tags, slightly dam. (mouth), rep. (right horn tip), cracks, metal base;
the “kpan pre” masks appear in pairs, male and female, red and black, wearing animal skins on their backs. The wearer looks through the open mouth. “kpan pre” appears to honour the buffalo god “goli”. The “goli” festival is a day-long spectacle that normally involves the whole village and includes the appearance of four pairs of masks, music played on special instruments, and, ideally, the joyous consumption of a great deal of palm wine. “Kpan pre” is the third mask pair to appear after “kplekple” and “goli glen” and is followed by “kpan” the senior female mask.
