Description
wood, matt patina, polychrome paint, crowned by four cone-like projections, remains of a raffia bonnet backside, pierced around the rim, min. dam., water stain (left cheek), traces of abrasion, base;
“phumbu” represents the executioner. The masquerader dresses in sumptuous textiles while he brandishes a huge double sided knife. He simulates anger tantrums and threatens the spectators. The face of “phumbu” is often dreadful. His mouth is open, he is ready to bellow with rage. The mask is sometimes taken for the chiefs mask “fumu”.
