Description

wood, facial plane whitened with kaolin, accents in black paint, bare teeth, tribal marks on the cheeks, ornamental eyebrows and framing of the face, the crest reminding of an elephant mask, unusual: tear-shaped deepenings, handwritten inscription backside “…collected 1972(?)”, slightly dam., minor missing parts (horns, nose), small traces of insect caused damage, rep. (chin/rim of the mask);
belonging to the men’s secret “mmwo society”. Northern Igbo masks take many forms: helmets of various configurations, face masks and a variety of headdresses and crest types.
