brass, Bhairava is the wrathful aspect of Shiva, accordingly the facial expression of the mask is terrifying, the broad mouth reveals strong teeth and large tusks, a stain on the forehead presumably symbolizing a third eye, slightly dam., possibly rest. (middle of the forehead);
the usage of masks depicting venerated deities is an old tradition in the area of Maharashtra. In the process various purposes of use developed. Face masks of deities were placed on shrines, they were superimposed to ritual images of stone or in case of the present mask fit on top of staffs in order to carry them along in religious processions.
