The face with the long projection under the chin, is worn horizontally on the head like a baseball cap. Several Pende specialists explain that the headdress incarnates the body of a deceased person which is being watched over. Its dance goes back to an archaic ritual through which the masquerade would release the spirits of the deceased of the village.
The object Mask “giwoyo” with the object ID 3043874 was last part of the auction 89th Tribal Art Auction at July 7, 2018 on Zemanek-Münster Auction house. The object with the lot number 130 achieved a sales price of EUR 950.
