Throughout the many islands of the Melanesian archipelago, unique ritual traditions and distinctive visual languages emerged.
This is especially evident in wooden masks, which represented ancestors and spirits and which were an essential part of ceremonial costumes made from plant fibers, feathers, pig teeth, and natural pigments.
