Description

light wood, greyish brown patina with remains of black paint, a broad bulging forehead, the extremely receding chin tapering to a point, provided with a longitudinal rib, bean-shaped raised eyes with narrow see slits, a small mouth, dam. (nose tip, ears, eyes), black paint extremely chipped off, rep. (on the upper rim), cracks, socle;
a comparable mask was offered by Parke-Bernet, London, 4 December 1965, lot 4. A further mask very similar to the present one was called up at Christie’s, Paris, 7 December 2006, lot 23. The stylistic resemblance of the three masks is striking, so that we can assume the masks to be from one workshop, even made by one artist.
