masquerades had various functions. They should honour ancestors and cultural heroes of the clan, they served to venerate deities of fertility and to perform mythological dances. Sketches and local history were performed from the villagers on occasion of religious, seasonal or family celebrations. This is why the masks show a broad range of variation.
