Description

wood, polychrome paint, heart-shaped deepened facial plane, three-parted coiffure, pierced around the rim, small missing parts, traces of insect caused damage and abrasion, socle;
the Kwese are a small ethnical group in the southwestern part of the Deomocratic Republic of Congo. The style of their sculptures and masks is strongly influenced by their neighbours, the Mbala, Pende and Suku.
Probably used at circumcision rites for young boys.
