Description

wood, reddish brown patina, remains of black paint, of oval hollowed form, crowned by three tooth-like projections (the right one missing), the whole face framed by three incised lines, pierced around the rim (mostly broken out), min. dam., traces of old insect caused damage, on metal base;
the Marka are divided into the Marka proper or Soninke Marka, living in Mali, and the Dafing or Dafing-Marka, settling in Burkina Faso. Both groups are cultivating different mask traditions, very similiar to those of the surrounding ethnic groups.


The object Mask with the object ID 3033479 was last part of the auction 70th tribal art auction at September 8, 2012 on Zemanek-Münster Auction house. The object with the lot number 220 achieved a sales price of EUR 5,400.
