Description

light brown wood, shiny patina, black paint remains, hairdo with side parting, min. dam., minor missing part (right ear), slight traces of abrasion;
alike the “ibeji” figures of the Yoruba, the “venavi” figures were carved for deceased twins or triplets. They serve as abode for the spirit of the deceased. The Ewe women used to care for them, they were fed, washed and caressed. For the Ewe venerate twins and regard them as a connecting link to the otherworld.


The object Male twin figure “venavi” with the object ID 3032318 was last part of the auction 68th tribal art auction at March 3, 2012 on Zemanek-Münster Auction house. The object with the lot number 177 achieved a sales price of EUR 350.
