Beautiful and finely crafted specimens in the style of Esubiyi, the founder of the second major carving workshop in Abeokuta or his son Akiode (1875-1936). For comparable figures see Homberger (1991), p. 36, ill. 47/48.
Typical characteristics of the Abeokuta carvers are above all the unusual hand posture and the carved loincloth. The facial features of both figures show traces of repeated washing and feeding procedures.
The object Male pair of twin figures “ere ibeji” with the object ID 3046504 was last part of the auction 94th Tribal Art Auction at March 7, 2020 on Zemanek-Münster Auction house. The object with the lot number 192 achieved a sales price of EUR 1,000.
