Roy truely notes to this exceptionally beautiful figure, that although “small”, the quality of the carving and careful attention to such details as the necklace give the impression of monumentality.
According to Leloup it can be assumed that there are two different types of statues among the Dogon. The most important serve as symbols of power and ensure the protection of the village, while others represent a “ginna” or a family member.
As links between humans and deities, the sculptures had the task of passing on the concerns and wishes of humans to their ancestors.
The object Male figure with necklace with the object ID 3046735 was part of the auction 95th Tribal Art Auction on October 24, 2020. The object with the lot number 134 achieved a sales price of EUR 3,500 with an asking price of EUR 2,500.
