Description
wood, pigments, hair, shell inlay, inscription: “W. Neu-Mecklenburg. Slg. Boluminski” (Collection Boluminski)
The present “malagan” head comes from the collection of Franz Boluminski. Boluminski (1863–1913) was a German colonial official who, from around the turn of the century, was stationed in Kavieng in northern New Ireland, then known as Neu-Mecklenburg. There he assembled extensive ethnographic collections, including in particular “malagan” and “uli” carvings. More than 1,000 objects entered German museums through his donations. Part of his collection was transferred to Munich after his death.
