Description

ceramic, black patina, partly openworked, rep. (breakages rim), small missing parts, traces of abrasion;
probably a work of the “rival of Abatan” in Oke Odan, a title distinguishing her from the other Egbado master potters.
The goddess “erinle” is associated with hunting, rivers and medicinal herbs.
River stones were kept in fresh water within lidded vessels. The female figure on the lid refers to “erinles” devotees. She cradles a small bowl used to hold a kola nut and two cowrie shells to communicate with the goddess.
