This beautiful headdress was possibly the property of the “egungun” society, which is dedicated to ancestor worship. Drewal noted in 1980 that animal imagery was common in “egungun” masking in order to demonstrate the powers of transformation possessed by supernatural forces (Drewal 1980, p. 85).

The object Leopard headdress with the object ID 3050864 was part of the auction 102nd Auction on April 13, 2024, lot number 106 at that time and is currently available for EUR 1,500 in Open sale.
