Description
wood, greyish brown patina, encrusted in some areas, typical arrow-shaped nose, fragmentary: both arms missing, just shoulders and both hands which are resting on the lap recognizable, cracks, paint rubbed off, on plate;
the kneeling posture is a common theme in Dogon art, especially in sculptures of women. Dogon women assume this kneeling pose at funerals, as a sign of grief and of gratitude to the deceased for a productive life.
