Kneeling female bowl bearer "olomeye"

Nigeria, Yoruba
sold EUR 1,600
Size
H: 43 cm
H: 16.9 inch

Description

wood, brown patina, remains of indigo blue pigment, carrying a child on her back, metal resp. coconut disc bracelets, rep. (left arm and hand), cracks, traces of abrasion;
figures of a kneeling woman offering a bowl can be seen in many Yoruba shrines. It is unlikely that the figure had a male companion, as it is often the case for female figures of “eshu”. For this reason it probably represents a female worshipper and not the trickster-god “eshu” himself in female form.
