Mehrgarh, in present-day Pakistan, is one of the earliest permanently inhabited settlement sites in South Asia and, from the 7th millennium BC onwards, developed into an important centre of agriculture, animal husbandry and craftsmanship. Small anthropomorphic terracotta figurines with highly stylised bodies, elaborately modelled hairstyles and jewellery are characteristic of the later settlement phases and rank among the earliest examples of figurative representation in the Indus region.
