The ancient Kingdom of Iberia (in present-day Georgia) played a central role in the Caucasus from the 4th century to the 5th century BC. Its strategic location attracted both the Roman and Persian empires, resulting in shifting vassal status and extensive economic and cultural exchange, which had a significant impact on Iberian society.
