Description

wood, partly encrusted dark brown patina, remains of pigments, triangular facial plane with raised nose bridge and grooved decor, surmounted by curved horns, rep. (breakage right horn tip), slight traces of abrasion, base;
the Toma use three diffeent types of masks: a male mask “landa” (“dandai”), the female type “nyangbai” and horned masks. They all belong to the “poro” men society. Present mask represents a mighty bush spirit, reminding of one of the most strongest and dangerous animals, the west african wood buffalo.
